International Memorial Project “Against Oblivion” in Odessa
On 22th October 2021, the first stone of the memorial complex “Against Oblivion” was laid in Odessa. It remembers the tragedy of the mass extermination of Jews in October 1941 and the ceremony was dedicated to 80th anniversary of local Jew’s deaths.
The German Ambassador to Ukraine, Anka Feldhusen, was shocked to fine the place of mass execution of Jews abandoned and paved. By October 2022, the construction of a memorial providing historical information is planned.
(Architects planned to give part of the future memorial to the park, where there will be paths, trees and lighting. On the main site, nine ceilings will be built, symbolizing nine barracks, information will be applied to them in different languages about victims and historial background.)
"Modern Germany, modern Ukraine, modern Romania stand in the position of returning dignity to the victims, honoring memory, and will be absolutely against transporting the transgressions of those regimes to today's countries. On the other hand, today's countries are responsible to remember the past. And here it is important not to confuse two concepts: guilt and responsibility. We are not guilty of anything, neither modern Ukraine nor modern Germany, we are responsible," said Anatoliy Popolsky, Director of the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies.
The project is funded by the German Embassy and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany and implemented with the support of the NGO "Center for Liberal Modernity".
