Annual Seminar in Holocaust Studies and Education, Poltava, 2013
Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (UCHS) in cooperation with Yad Vashem Authority in Jerusalem and Euroasian Jewish Congress held on 30 June - 5 July 2013 the annual educational seminar in issues of Holocaust history and education for teachers of history and humanities. This year teachers from all over Ukraine and also Belarus and Moldova gathered in Poltava, Ukraine. Moreover, participants of 2013 had a chance to take part in an experiment: for the first time the annual seminar by UCHS lasted for 6 days, more than twice of the usual length.
In such conditions the usual range of topics was expanded to include, among others, more subtle discussions on origins of totalitarianism and sources of Nazi ideology, its specificities; a detailed outline on particular features of the Holocaust in Ukrainian territories and other European countries; a talk on Jewish resistance; a presentation on the fates of non-Jewish victims of the Nazi regime. Naturally, the practical and methodical section of the seminar was also enriched by, to name some, an advanced course on using of video-sources and a master-class on taking and using life testimonies.
To deal with the difficult questions the participants enjoyed help not only from UCHS researchers and educators, but also guest lecturers from Jerusalem, Kyiv, Poltava, Rivne, Hadyach and Kharkiv.
