IN MEMORIAM of Larysa Volovyk (1939-2023)

insidethegatesOn July 14, 2023, Larysa Faliivna Volovyk, Merited Culture Worker of Ukraine, founder of the first Kharkiv Holocaust Museum in Ukraine, passed away.
Her main work was focused on preserving the memory of the Nazi genocide against the Jews of Ukraine during World War II. In 1996, she founded the first non-governmental Holocaust museum in Ukraine in Kharkiv and was its permanent director. For almost thirty years she headed the Righteous Among the Nations Program. According to the documents she prepared, about 90 Kharkiv residents were awarded the honorary title of Righteous Among the Nations of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies has been cooperating with Ms. Larysa for many years in the field of preserving and honoring the memory of Holocaust victims in Ukraine.

She was awarded the title of Merited Culture Worker of Ukraine, the Honorary Diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Acknowledgment of the Prime Minister of Ukraine (twice), the Certificate of Honor of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine, and the Certificates of Honor of the Kharkiv Regional State Administration (twice) and so many others. 

A memorial service for Larysa Volovyk took place on July 16 at the cemetery in Herzliya, Israel.
We express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Larysa Volovyk.

The event was organized by the Shoah Memorial  (Paris) in partnership with the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (Kyiv) and ORE (Warsaw). Ukraine was represented by 20 history and social studies teachers from 14 regions of the country.
