War Discourses: Analysing narratives about the contemporary war in Ukraine in the context of memories of the Second World War and the Holocaust.
On 30 November, at 18.00 in Kyiv and 17.00 in Berlin, an online presentation of the project War Discourses: Analysing narratives about the contemporary war in Ukraine in the context of memories of the Second World War and the Holocaust will be held by Protecting Memory.
Protecting Memory initiated this project in response to the frequent comparisons in Ukrainian public discourse between the experience of World War II and the Holocaust and the experience and consequences of the full-scale war waged by russia against Ukraine. We decided to take a closer look at this phenomenon and its impact on local memory of the Holocaust.
The aim of the project was to investigate how discourses about World War II and the Holocaust and the current full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine influence each other. To do this, we focused on quantitative and qualitative analysis of public discourse from 24.02.2022 to 31.12.2022 using an automatic programme for analysing online sources (including social media), as well as on the cultural interpretation of the collected sources.
During the presentation, we would like to share the interim results of the current stage of the project. We hope that the observations and trends that we have identified in the public discourse can be deepened in future research.
Sincerely, Protecting Memory project team
