Mila Sandberg Memorial Day in Zalishchyky
Mila Sandberg Memorial Day was held at Zalishchyky Gymnasium in Ternopil Oblast, a symbolic memorial event related to the comprehension of historical memory.
Mila Sandberg-Mesner (22.11.1923 - 3.11.2023) was a girl from a Jewish family in Zalishchyky. At the age of nineteen, she escaped the tragic events of the Holocaust. Later, in emigration, she became a writer and author of the memoir Light From the Shadows. On her initiative, in 2011, a place of remembrance for the Jewish community that disappeared during the Nazi occupation was established in Zalishchyky.
In her retirement, Mila became an active public speaker about the holocaust. After she passed away, her friends and family have launched an international commemorative initiative - planting trees in her memory. https://montrealgazette.remembering.ca/.../mila-sandberg...
So, on Mila Sandberg Memorial Day, the gymnasium audience not only learned about her life, got presented the Ukrainian edition of her memoirs, Light From the Shadows, but also planted a magnolia tree in Mila’s memory.
We thank everyone involved in this event. The world is a little bit kinder thanks to all of you.
