Open lecture at Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University
On 29 November 2024, Anatolii Podolskyi, Head of the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, gave a lecture on Challenges in the Study of Holocaust History during the Russian War against Ukraine for students and teachers of the History Faculty of Zhytomyr Ivan Franko State University as part of the university's Visiting Professors programme.
The scholar examined important aspects of the study of genocide, commemoration of the victims of not only the Holocaust (and the Nazi Hitler regime), but also the modern Russian criminal regime. The lecturer focused on the following issues: the crimes of the aggressor country against people and memorials, the comparison of memory and crimes, and the possibility of using the experience of commemorating the Holocaust to commemorate the victims and heroes of the Russian war against Ukraine.
The participants of the meeting got acquainted with the developments and publications on this topic that have appeared since the beginning of the full-scale invasion and will eventually be useful to future teachers (methodological recommendations ‘How to talk about the Holocaust after 24 February 2022’). The students gained valuable experience in talking about complex and difficult topics in an accessible and interesting way, encouraging not only reflection, but also active work in the field of preserving and commemorating historical memory.
The discussion of the report and the questions the students asked the lecturer showed their interest in the topic and their willingness to change stereotypes.
