The russian War against Ukraine. Consequences for the Politics of Memory

On February 14, 2023, the Jewish Museum Berlin invites you to a discussion with the German Minister of State for Culture, Claudia Roth, Dr. Andrea Despot, Dr. Anatolii Podolskyi (joins online) and Floriane Azolay. Since the end of February2022, russia has been waging a war of aggression against Ukraine in violation of international law. In the shadow of the acute humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, another threat is looming: the fundamental instrumentalization of history.

What does the war in Ukraine mean for German, Jewish and Ukrainian memory cultures? What reflections – such as the deflection of guilt and the relativization of the Holocaust and Nazi injustice – can be indentified in German public debate, and how can they be countered? Dr. Andrea Despot, CEO of the EVZ Foundation, will hold the discussion with Minister of State for Culture, Claudia Roth, Director of the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies in Kyiv, Dr. Anatolii Podolskyi and Director of the Arolsen Archives, Floriane Azolay. In cooperation with the Foundation for Remembrance, Responsibility and Future (EVZ)

The media outlet Local History has published an essay by one of our researchers, Tetiana Shyshkina, historian and PhD candidate at the University of Hesse. For the Stolpersteine project, she and her sister researched and prepared the biography of Rakhil Kozyra - a deeply personal story.

Call for Applications: International Seminar ‘The Holocaust as a Starting Point’

The Holocaust as a Starting Point (HSP) program, launched by the Mémorial de la Shoah and partners, supports Holocaust education through international teacher training. Within the “Polish-Ukrainian Dialogue,” the Polish Centre for Education Development (ORE), the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies, and the Mémorial de la Shoah will host two seminars for 45 teachers from Ukraine and Poland.
