Babyn Yar: Thousands of Memory Ravines Across Ukraine

insidethegatesOn 9 September 2025, the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience held a teleconference between Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro and Zakarpattia, dedicated not only to the tragedy of Babyn Yar, but also to tens of thousands of sites of mass crimes throughout Ukraine.

Participants discussed the Holocaust, the genocide of the Roma, and political repression as part of a single chain of violence that left ‘wounds of memory’ in every region. Against the backdrop of the current war, these tragedies of the 20th century take on new meaning.

Three thematic panels - ‘Historical Analysis,’ ‘Righteous and Witnesses,’ and ‘Art and Memory’ - showed how active memory can become a tool for education, solidarity, and resistance to new forms of totalitarianism.
