Online lecture by Dr. Daniel Romanovsky: “The Position of Christian Churches during Holocaust”

insidethegatesOn Sunday, 21st February 2021, Ukrainian listeners had the opportunity to attend an online lecture “The Position of Christian Churches during Holocaust” by Dr.. Daniel Romanovsky. The lecture arouse great interest among the graduates of our projects. While mentioning the pro-Nazi position of certain Ukrainian church-leaders, Romanovsky focused on the saving role of clergy.

The audiences main questions were specifically about Sheptytsky, the lecturer’s attitude towards the Greek-Catholic Ukrainian metropolitan who harboured hundreds of Jews during WW2, as well as the failure to grant the metropolitan the title of “Righteous Among the Nations”. Romanovsky noted, that the issue of this question will be possibly considered again in the future and may end positively, as for Ukrainian interests.

The lecture was jointly organized by the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies and the Memorial of Yad Vashem.

    On 26-28 September 2025, a methodological seminar entitled How to Talk About the Holocaust with Schoolchildren was held in Kyiv. Educators from nine regions of Ukraine gathered to learn, exchange experiences and seek answers to difficult questions. The seminar participants had already successfully completed the online course How to Talk About the Holocaust with Schoolchildren, which began on 10 June 2025, and now had the opportunity to continue their training in the format of direct professional communication.
