Open Lecture on the Occasion of the International Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Roma Genocide at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

insidethegatesOn July 28, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine hosted a lecture marking the International Remembrance Day for the Victims of the Nazi Genocide of the Roma, organized as part of the “Memory Diplomacy” initiative.

First Deputy Minister Serhiy Kyslytsia emphasized the importance of addressing historical blind spots and manifestations of intolerance based on national and religious grounds, as well as the need for systematic efforts to honor the victims of Nazism.

Historian Mykhailo Tiaglyy delivered a lecture titled The Genocide of Roma in Ukraine: History and Memory, outlining the stages of Nazi policy toward Roma, citing examples of mass executions, and assessing the current state of remembrance.

Presidential Advisor Daria Herasymchuk addressed the issue of prejudice against Roma and stressed the significance of preserving memory as a foundation for unity in Ukraine’s multiethnic society.

Director of the Babyn Yar National Historical Memorial Reserve, Roza Tapanova, called for the establishment of traditions to commemorate August 2 and announced the opening of the exhibition Invisible. Resilience: Past and Present of the Roma.

Exhibition curators Volodymyr Yakovenko and Nataliia Tomenko highlighted the Roma community’s contribution to Ukraine’s development and the importance of empowering Roma youth.

The event is part of a programme organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Babyn Yar National Memorial, aimed at strengthening the role of diplomacy in preserving historical memory during wartime.
